Dr. David Bartels
Medical Oncologist & Founder
For Dr. Bartels, practicing medical oncology is a true passion. From the time he began pursuing medicine, he has always had a strong connection to cancer prevention and treatment, and he is dedicated to the advancement of the field and especially to providing exceptional care to all of his patients. As many of them will attest, Dr. Bartels always goes above and beyond for his patients.
Dr. Bartels treats all types of cancer and blood disorders. He opened Beacon Clinic for the purpose of creating a cancer center that treats patients and staff as family. “The culture at Beacon is something that I am very proud of—Beacon is often referred to as a happy place, which is not typically the first word that comes to mind when describing a cancer center.”
Dr. David Bartels moved to Coeur d’Alene from Iowa in 2014 and quickly fell in love with North Idaho. Dr. Bartels and his wife Krista are dedicated to the community and wonderful residents of North Idaho. Together they enjoy many of the wonderful outdoor activities the area has to offer, with cycling, snow skiing and fly fishing being a few of Dr. Bartels’ favorites. They also have three young children who keep them on their toes.

Dr. Dustin Dinning
Rheumatologist
Dr. Dustin Dinning has been practicing rheumatology in the Coeur d’Alene area for over 10 years. He looks forward to continuing to serve this area for years to come. He would like to welcome past patients and will continue to open his practice up for new patients. One of the many reasons Dr. Dinning chose rheumatology is he is able to develop a long-term relationship with his patients. Rheumatologic diseases, although very treatable, are chronic diseases that may last for the rest of a patient’s life. Having a good physician-patient relationship is vital for success in treatment.
Dr. Dinning treats a variety of autoimmune disease including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, systemic lupus erythematosus, myositis, and vasculitis. These complicated diseases often require special, targeted medications and Dr Dinning’s passion is having a thorough understanding of the available therapies and being able to help patients feel comfortable with their options.
Dr. Dinning was born and raised in the North Idaho/Eastern Washington area. He attended Eastern Washington University in Cheney, WA for his undergraduate studies. He attended Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences for medical school. He completed his internship, residency and rheumatology fellowship at Michigan State University. Dr. Dinning did all his training alongside his wife, Andrea, who is a local internal medicine physician. He also has two active daughters. Dr. Dinning’s family is his priority and most of his free time is spent with them. He enjoys waterfowl hunting, hiking, boating, and weight lifting.

Dr. Danko Martincic
Medical Oncologist
Dr. Danko Martincic is a medical oncologist at Beacon Clinic. He received his graduate degree at the University of Zagreb in Zagreb, Croatia and transferred to the University of Southern California and Vanderbilt University to complete his postgraduate training and education. He has been working in oncology and hematology since 2002 and is also a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and the American Society of Hematology.
Dr. Danko has been known to say that he did not choose a career, but a lifestyle. His philosophy is that “people still get sick after 5:00 P.M.,” and he wants to do everything he can to help patients reach a better tomorrow.
Dr. Danko is originally from Croatia and currently resides in Spokane with his wife. He is the proud father of two daughters, and in his free time he enjoys hiking, tennis, traveling, and enjoying the great outdoors.

Dr. Jonathan Sharrett
Radiation Oncologist
Dr. Sharrett is a Board-Certified Radiation Oncologist at Beacon Clinic. He completed 4 years of specialty training in Radiation Oncology at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH, which also included a rotation at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for additional pediatric training. He was born and raised in a small town in the Appalachia Tennessee region, and went into active-duty U.S. military following high school graduation. During his time in the service, both his mother and grandmother were battling stage IV cancer diagnoses. While he had a strong passion and background in helping other’s health through fitness and nutrition, these personal family experiences significantly impacted the trajectory of his life, with the realization that he wanted to become an oncologist and help patients fight cancer in the most holistic, compassionate way possible. During medical school, his rotation doing cancer research at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX further solidified his desire to become specifically a Radiation Oncologist.
Dr. Sharrett has been practicing in the Spokane/Post Falls area since 2020, and he is excited to continue his career with Beacon Clinic in delivering the highest quality, patient-centered, multi-disciplinary care for patients in North Idaho and surrounding areas. He sees every patient visit as an opportunity to try to help make a positive difference in his patients’ lives, whether that involves their cancer, another non-cancer diagnosis or concern, or their overall well-being.
Dr. Sharrett also enjoys teaching medical students and residents, and he is on faculty at the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine at Washington State University. In his free time, he enjoys sports, watching documentaries, doing physically challenging exercise/activity, exploring philosophical/psychological teachings regarding the overall human condition, and spending quality time with others.

Stephanie Hart, ARNP
Oncology Nurse Practitioner
Stephanie is a Nurse Practitioner at Beacon Clinic who has been caring for oncology patients for over 20 years. She received both her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and her Master of Science in Nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner from Washington State University. She is also certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.
Stephanie is an incredible practitioner with a passion for oncology care. She has 24 years of nursing experience, with 20 of those being in oncology. She has over 10 years of experience as an oncology NP and has worked in many aspects of cancer care, including medical oncology, surgical oncology and radiation oncology. Her special interests include education and symptom management.
Stephanie grew up in a small farming town south of Spokane, Washington. She enjoys outdoor activities with her family, and she is the mother of two — both of whom attend Washington State University. They are all lifelong Cougs!

Gretchen Helvey, ARNP
Oncology Nurse Practitioner
Gretchen Helvey, ARNP is a Nurse Practitioner at Beacon Clinic. Gretchen received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) at Creighton University and has been an oncology nurse for over 11 years. Oncology is her passion, and Gretchen became an Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) in 2016. She then went on to complete the Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner program through the University of Providence and obtained certification through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners.
She is an active board member of the Inland Northwest chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) and has joined a team of colleagues in rebuilding a local Relay for Life event. She is very excited to begin her career as a Nurse Practitioner here at Beacon and continue to support the patients who have fueled her love for this field.
Gretchen moved here from the Midwest in 2014. She and her husband, Clete, have been married for six years and have two spoiled dogs: Roscoe who is a dopey English Springer Spaniel and JoJo who is super-mutt tripawd. They all love exploring the outdoors and finding new adventures in the area.

Grace Muliawan, PA-C
Oncology Physician Assistant
Grace is a Physician Assistant who joined the Beacon family in 2020. She found her passion for patient care in oncology during a clinical rotation with Beacon when completing her Master of Physician Assistant Studies at Idaho State University. She loves how oncology brings together her passion of caring for others with medicine, yet makes every individual’s story unique.
Grace also received her Master of Public Health from George Washington University, Bachelor of Science in Microbiology, Immunology & Molecular Genetics from UCLA, and has 14 years of previous patient care experience as a medical assistant in Urgent Care, Women’s Health, and Allergy & Asthma clinics.
In her free time, Grace enjoys anything outdoors and under the sun, country music and rooting on her Dodgers.

Lacy Engelstad, ARNP
Rheumatology Nurse Practitioner
Lacy graduated from Gonzaga University in 2021 with her Master of Science in Nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner and received her board certification through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Prior to transitioning to Rheumatology, she was working in Internal Medicine. Before obtaining her graduate degree, Lacy received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Seattle University in 2013. Her previous patient care experience includes working in the intensive care unit with patients who were critically ill, as well as post-anesthesia care where she cared for patients before and after surgery.Lacy moved from Texas to the Northwest in 2007 and has been residing in Coeur d’Alene since 2013. Lacy and her husband enjoy spending time with their two children. Lacy enjoys gardening, cooking, beekeeping, and camping.

Brooke Skurupey, ARNP
Oncology Nurse Practitioner
Brooke is a Nurse Practitioner at Beacon Clinic. Brooke graduated with her Master of Science in Nursing and received her board certification in Family Medicine in 2014. She has practiced in Family Medicine, Inpatient Orthopedics, and Oncology/Palliative Care.
Prior to obtaining her Master’s degree, Brooke worked as an inpatient nurse in Post-Operative Care and was certified in Medical/Surgical Nursing. She is passionate about providing compassionate, evidence-based care to the patients she serves. She is honored for the opportunity to return to Oncology/Hematology and to stand with each patient while they navigate their individual healthcare journey.
Brooke is committed to the community, as she was born and raised in Dalton Gardens, Idaho. She is married and has three children. She enjoys spending time with her family, hiking, camping, gardening, and reading.

Dr. Brian Samuels
Physician Emeritus
Dr. Samuels is a sarcoma specialist and consultant for Beacon Clinic. The uniquely patient-centered philosophy of Beacon completely resonates with how Dr. Samuels has taken care of and related to his patients throughout his career.
During most of his time in North Idaho, Dr. Samuels took care of patients with many different cancers and blood disorders, with the last few years of his career focused specifically on taking care of patients with soft tissue and bone sarcomas. Though he is no longer engaging in direct patient care, he still consults on sarcoma cases and shares his expertise in the field with other Beacon providers.
Dr. Samuels and his wife, Lesley, moved from Chicago to North Idaho in 2004, and enjoyed raising their three children here and becoming members of this wonderful community. They are now transitioning into retirement with lots of travel and time spent with their grandson.
